Our clients the Kendall’s could have built a three story home on the ocean at Kiawah.  However, they chose to do a two story home with generous ceiling heights plus the added bonus of having a lawn just a couple of steps down from the main level of the home.  Our landscape architect, John Tarkany came up with this slight of hand through ingenious stepped vegetated retaining walls and we provided a concrete retaining wall behind it to support all the soil to bring the grade up to above the floodplain.  This Grand Lawn meets the oceanfront porch and then will naturally transition into the tertiary dunes.  Because we are in a floodplain we have a system of flood vents in the hidden foundation to accommodate flood waters in a storm event.
