| Tyler Armistead Smyth, AIA, LEED AP, Studio Manager
Tyler earned his Master of Architecture from Clemson University in 2003 and received his Bachelor of Science in biology from Vanderbilt University in 1996. He studied abroad for one semester at the Charles E. Daniel Center in Genoa, Italy during his graduate education. In addition, he has studied architecture across Europe, including significant visits to Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, London, Greece, and extensive travel throughout Italy. Tyler has considerable experience in the construction trades, having picked up knowledge of wood and steel framing, plumbing, all finish work, tiling, and associated building systems while working in his youth for his family, which includes general contractors in Charleston and the Sea Islands.
In 2002, Tyler participated in the founding of Studio South, a new graduate level design-build curriculum at Clemson University. In part to carry out his thesis work, Studio South was established and completed the design and construction of its inaugural project, a Memory Park in Pendleton, South Carolina entitled “The Hundreds.” Studio South received the 2003 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Collaborative Practice Award for The Hundreds. The combination of architectural design and the construction process is central to Tyler’s philosophy that architects benefit greatly when they have extensive knowledge in multiple areas of construction. With this familiarity, an architect can be in the best position to maximize the potential in every project while minimizing the potential problems inherent in custom construction.
Tyler has six years of professional design experience with architecture firms in Greenville and Charleston, including over five years full-time with Christopher Rose Architects. He began working with CRA in 1999, building models as an intern while in graduate school. In 2005, he gained his registration as a Licensed Architect in South Carolina and in 2007 was promoted to Studio Manager.
Tyler’s interests include travel, home renovation, live music and boating in the saltwater estuaries in the vicinity of Charleston. With his wife, Michelle, he recently completed the restoration of his 1910's residence in Charleston's Hampton Park Terrace.
