Corten Steel Stairs being installed

Sean Ahern of Ahern Anvil started this week installing the front entry stairs for a contemporary home we designed for a young Chicago couple at Kiawah on Sweet Spire. The stairs are made of Corten Steel wall over a concrete base. This type of steel doesn’t need painting as the steel rusts the rust provides the exterior protective “crust”. The main curved Corten steel wall was inpired by American sculptor Richard Serra who’s sculptures use curved steel walls to define space. Ahern Anvil has done an excellent job installing these. Complimenting these stairs, landscape architect JR Kramer of ReMark Studio are using curved steel as retaining walls on the site. Matt Byrd of Byrd Builder is doing a wonderful job as the general contractor on this home. They have handled these sophisticated elements with ease.

New Contemporary Rain Porch Home in Florence, SC

Share Button

A contemporary home we designed is coming out of the ground in Florence, SC.  It is for two doctors and we have designed an updated “rain porch” home.  This is a unique architectural style from the Pee Dee Region where the home is being built.  For the porches on these homes the columns go from the ground to the roof and the porch is pulled back from these so the edges of the porch don’t get wet during a storm.  Therefore the name “Rain Porch” home.  The home is being built by Jody Lane and ReMark Studio is the landscape architects on the job.

Happy 108th birthday to Charles Eames, Jr.

Charles and his wife and collaborator Ray Eames are considered one of the most important American designers of the 20th Century.  The Eames chair (pictured here) is a classic design that is still popular and in production.  He made modernism acceptable to non-elite Americans.  His driving principal was a life made better through design and technology.Unknown
